Description
Honeyeaters, mainly from Australia and New Guinea. Some species are found in the Wallacea (E Indonesia) and on islands of the Pacific Ocean.
Taxonomy
Meliphagidae is a family in the Order Passeriformes.
New research has shown that the Bonin Honeyeater is not a Honeyeater at all but a White-eye and is now placed within the Zosteropidae.
The so-called Hawaiian Honeyeaters were placed in this family in the past but are now in their own family Mohoidae.
Macgregor's Honeyeater was long believed to be a Bird-of-paradise, but is now known to belong to this family.
Recently the Australian Chats have been included in this family (genera Epthianura and Ashbyia) while the Stitchbird has been moved to its own family, Notiomystidae.
