Papuan Black Myzomela - BirdForum Opus

Alternative names: Blackened Honeyeater, Black Myzomela

Myzomela nigrita


10–12 cm (3-5 in)

  • Overall black plumage
  • White underwing coverts


Southeast Asia: occurs in Indonesia, Moluccas
Australasia: Papua New Guinea


Has been considered conspecific with and Bismarck Black Myzomela.


There are 6 subspecies[1]:

  • M. n. steini: Waigeo Island (New Guinea)
  • M. n. nigrita: New Guinea and Aru Islands
  • M. n. meyeri: Northern New Guinea and Yapen Island
  • M. n. pluto: Meos Num Island (New Guinea)
  • M. n. forbesi: D'Entrecasteaux Archipelago
  • M. n. louisiadensis: Louisiade Archipelago


Moist lowland forests, forest edges and tall secondary growth.



Their diet consists mostly of nectar and insects.
