Description
These are the seedeaters - very small birds of subtropical or tropical shrubland, pastureland, heavily degraded former forest, or marshlands: wherever grasses are found to provide the sole diet of seeds. They are overwhelmingly birds of South America, with a few exceptions further north, in one case to southern Texas in the USA
Taxonomy
Sporophila is a genus in the family Thraupidae.
It was formerly placed in the family Emberizidae.
The former species of the genus Oryzoborus and Dolospingus are now subsumed into this genus.
