Black-and-tawny Seedeater - BirdForum Opus

Identification

Male has black cap that is cut straight off just below the eye, and black back contrasting with underside, rump, and semicollar that is rich tawny in fresh plumage, fading to buff; wing feathers are richly edged white in fresh plumage, all black in worn.
Female is mostly buffy.

Similar Species

Female very similar to female Tawny-bellied Seedeater

Distribution

Extreme eastern Bolivia, and south-western Brazil (Mato Grosso).

Seven known sites have been identified in eastern Santa Cruz, Bolivia; and three locations in Brazil: Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul.

This species is classified as vulnerable by Birdlife International

This is a monotypic species1.

Habitat

Tall grasses bordering seasonally flooded pantano or ditch

Behaviour

Eats seeds. Outside of breeding season seen in mixed species flocks. Does not seem to migrate.
