This is a monotypic species[1].

This population has in the past been considered intermediate between Variable Seedeater and Wing-barred Seedeater and therefore thought to be a hybrid population, but that was recently shown not to be the case. Caqueta Seedeater is supposed to be part of a complex containing the above mentioned two species and Gray Seedeater.

Shrubs near lakes and rivers, open humid grassland.

The diet includes seeds, stems, leaves and fruits.
