Caqueta Seedeater - BirdForum Opus

Identification

  • Black upperparts
  • White underparts
  • White streaked black rump
  • White wing bars
  • Small white wing-speculum
  • Black chest band
  • Grey mottled flanks
  • Black bill

Female

  • Buff-olive upperparts
  • Pale olive-ochre underparts
  • Brown bill

Distribution

South America: found in south-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru and eastern Brazil.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

This population has in the past been considered intermediate between Variable Seedeater and Wing-barred Seedeater and therefore thought to be a hybrid population, but that was recently shown not to be the case. Caqueta Seedeater is supposed to be part of a complex containing the above mentioned two species and Gray Seedeater.

Habitat

Shrubs near lakes and rivers, open humid grassland.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes seeds, stems, leaves and fruits.
