Overview
This national park is situated on a fairly narrow strip of land along the lower reaches of the river Oder (hence the name), northeast of Berlin, between Lunow-Stolzenhagen in the south and Gartz in the north. The landscape is characterized by artificial polders, i.e. diked marshes, as well as stretches of riparian forest and reed beds. There are many watercourses of varying sizes; the easternmost one is the main course of the Oder that marks the border with Poland. Overall, the landscape is very flat but quite scenic and great for bicycle tours during the warmer months.

The national park is a breeding place for 160 different bird species and serves as a resting place for up to 100.000 geese and ducks during migration time. Up to 10.000 cranes can be observed near Gartz. It is also a good place for watching White-tailed Eagle (80% of all White-tailed Eagles in Germany live in Mecklenburg and Brandenburg, ca. 400 pairs), both White Stork and Black Stork, Red-backed Shrike, Golden Oriole, and a large variety of warblers including Barred Warbler.

Access and Facilities
Bringing a bicycle or renting one locally is highly recommended due to the nature of the park and very limited access by car (except for staff). At least during the summer months, the condition of the roads is well suited for bicycles (asphalt in many places).
