England, Northumberland

Overview

Newbiggin by the Sea is a small seaside town in SE Northumberland. To the northeast of the town lies Church Point which is an excellent seawatching location. Beyond Church Point lies Newbiggin Golf Course which stretches north for 1km. Just inland from the golf course is an area of gorse and rough scrub on the edge of the Lynemouth Power Station ash lagoons, which is a good area for warblers. A small wooded copse ('The Mound') between the town and the ash lagoons is also a good migrant trap. There is no access to the ash lagoons.

Areas of Interest

Inland the golf course is edged by the tall baffle banks of an old ash lagoon complex related to the nearby smelter. These seaward facing banks are scrubbing over and provide excellent migrant habitat.
