Overview

This is one of the most popular areas in Switzerland for visitors and large numbers come here for bathing, angling, canoeing etc but it is also an excellent area for birds. Despite the pressure from so many visitors the site remains one of the most beautiful parts of the country.

The Clos-du-Doubs is formed by a large meander in the River Doubs, almost forming an island. Habitats include the river itself and steep rocky cliffs, wooded hillsides and scrub.

Birds

Notable Species

Birds of the river include Grey Heron and Common Kingfisher, Grey Wagtail and Common Dipper all year with Little Grebe, Great Cormorant, Goosander and other ducks in winter. The cliffs hold Peregrine Falcon, Eurasian Crag Martin, Black Redstart and Northern Raven, and Wallcreeper winters here and has even been known to winter in the village of St-Ursanne.

Wooded areas are home to raptors including Black Kite and Red Kite, Eurasian Goshawk and Eurasian Sparrowhawk and there are woodpeckers such as Black Woodpecker, Green Woodpecker, Grey-headed Woodpecker, and Great Spotted Woodpecker.

Access and Facilities

In the west of Switzerland, on the border with France, St-Ursanne makes an ideal base from which to explore this area. There is an excellent footpath following the river and after a walk of about 15km ends at the village of Soubey.

Both Soubey and St-Ursanne have hotel accommodation and there are several campsites in the area.
