Genus: Asthenes

Description

The name Canastero mean basket-weaver because the nests of these birds do remind of a basket. These Ovenbirds tend to run around with relatively long tails raised vertically.

Taxonomy

Asthenes is a genus in the Family Furnariidae. A recent paper proposes to place four of these species in a new genus Pseudasthenes: Dusky-tailed Canastero, Patagonian Canastero, Steinbach's Canastero, and Cactus Canastero. This new genus has now been recognized by SACC; the Opus awaits the position of the world-wide checklists.
