Identification
14–16 cm (5½-6¼ in)
- Brown upperparts
- Cream white lower parts
- Pale grey superciliary
- Color of ear-coverts, wings and tail are variable among subspecies, but always dark.
- Rufous rump and flanks
- Chestnut chin patch
Distribution
South America: found in the Andes of Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 5 subspecies[1], which are sometimes split in three species:
Creamy-breasted Canastero (A. dorbignyi)
- A. d. consobrina:
- Andes of north-western Bolivia (La Paz)
- A. d. dorbignyi:
- Andes of Bolivia and north-western Argentina
- Andes of Bolivia and north-western Argentina
Dark-winged Canastero (A. arequipae)
- A. d. arequipae:
Pale-tailed Canastero (A. huancavelicae)
- A. d. usheri:
- Arid Andes of south-central Peru (Ancash to Apurímac)
- A. d. huancavelicae:
- Arid Andes of south-western Peru (Huancavelica)
Habitat
High-altitude shrubland and scrub, below Puna habitat.
Behaviour
Diet
They forage singly and in pairs for seeds and insects.
Breeding
Builds its large nest with side entrance in large cactus.
