Identification
One of the largest of the Empidonax flycatchers at 15cm in length. Distiguishable from many flycatchers by lack of an eye ring.
Similar Speices
Usually indistinguishable from Alder Flycatcher except by voice. Flatish forehead, peak on rear of head.
Likely to overlap with Acadian Flycatcher, Alder Flycatcher, Buff-breasted Flycatcher, Dusky Flycatcher, Gray Flycatcher, Hammond's Flycatcher, Least Flycatcher, Western Flycatcher, Pine Flycatcher, White-throated Flycatcher, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher, Yellowish Flycatcher.

U.S. except for southeast Mexico.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Clements recognises the following subspecies [1]:
- E. t. adastus - Breeds from Great Basin and central Rocky Mts. south to Utah and Colorado
- E. t. brewsteri - Pacific northwest (s British Columbia) to Sierra Nevada
- E. t. extimus - Breeds from s California e to New Mexico
- E. t. traillii - Breeds from Great Plains to ne US and se Canada; winters to nw S America
Habitat
Low brushy areas often near water.
Behaviour
They make a cup nest in a vertical fork in a shrub.
The diet includes insects and berries.
