Corsica

Overview

In the north-west of Corsica, near Calvi, this scenically beautiful reserve is part of a collapsed volcano and has an interesting range of breeding birds.

Birds

Notable Species

Osprey and Peregrine Falcon nest on the rugged cliffs of this peninsula along with various seabirds, swifts and Eurasian Crag Martin.

Inland the main habitat is dense maquis with many passerine breeders and particularly Sylvia warblers.

History and Use

The seas around the headland are popular for diving and snorkelling and the protected area extends into the sea where controls on fishing and disturbance have led to an increase in the variety and abundance of marine life.

Access and Facilities

The reserve forms part of the extensive Corse Regional Park. It is best visited by boat from either Calvi or Porto, most trips stop at the village of Girolata and from here the maquis-covered hillsides can be explored.
