Overview
Muddus is a large national park in Sweden's far north consisting of forests, lakes and marshes largely on a plateau bisected by a valley, broad in the north but passing through narrow gorges in the south.
About half the park is ancient forest, mainly pine and spruce with some birch and willow, most of the remainder is marshes and peatlands with a small area of high altitude tundra and rocky plateaux and gorges.
Birds
Notable Species
There are three bird sanctuaries within the park to which access is restricted during the breeding season and an observation tower open all year.
The wetlands have Black-throated Diver, Whooper Swan and various ducks, Dunlin, Wood Sandpiper and Common Sandpiper.
Owls include Ural Owl, Northern Hawk Owl, Eurasian Eagle Owl and Tengmalm's Owl and a range of raptors can be seen including Golden Eagle, Hen Harrier, Osprey and Peregrine Falcon.
The forests are home to Western Capercaillie, Great Grey Shrike, Redwing, Pine Grosbeak and Brambling.

Muddus is also famous for its mammals with Brown Bear, Wolverine, Lynx, Pine Marten and Otter as well as Reindeer, Elk and Beaver.

Access and Facilities
The park has campsites and cabins for tourists, there are marked hiking trails and the observation tower at Lake Muddusluobbal.
The easiest approach is from Ligga, 20km north of Jokkmokk. Alternatively the park can be reached on foot from Nattavara to Solaure Lake or from Sarkavare.
