Vireo pallens

Identification

Iris varies from dark to pale. Plumage varies from yellowish on Yucatan and western Mexico to greyish on the Pacific side (especially south from Honduras). Most birds have pale lemon-yellow supraloral.

Central America: found in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Providencia (politically a part of Colombia).

Taxonomy

Subspecies[1]

There are 5 subspecies:

  • V. p. paluster:
  • Mangroves of north-western Mexico (extreme south-western Sonora to Nayarit)
  • V. p. semiflavus:
  • V. p. ochraceus:
  • V. p. approximans
  • Isla Providéncia and Isla Santa Catalina (Caribbean Sea)
  • V. p. pallens:

The subspecies approximans has in the past been considered a subspecies of Thick-billed Vireo. it is sometimes considered a full species, Providencia Vireo.
A further 6 spubspecies (nicoyensis, salvini, wetmorei, angulensis, browningi, olsoni) are not generally recognized[1].

Habitat

Forests, coastal mangrove forest and shrubland. Except for on Yucatán, only found very close to the coast.

Behaviour

Vocalizations

Calls often consist of repetitions of a single sound. Song can be more varied, sometimes suggesting House Wren[4].
