Identification
Iris varies from dark to pale. Plumage varies from yellowish on Yucatan and western Mexico to greyish on the Pacific side (especially south from Honduras). Most birds have pale lemon-yellow supraloral.
Distribution
Central America: found in Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Providencia (politically a part of Colombia).
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Clements recognizes these subspecies[1]:
- V. p. paluster:
- mangroves from southwestern Sonora to northwestern Jalisco (northwestern Mexico)
- V. p. semiflavus:
- Mainly along coast and on offshore islands from southeastern Guatemala to far northeastern Costa Rica
- V. p. ochraceus:
- Mangroves of Oaxaca (southwestern Mexico) to western El Salvador
- V. p. salvini:
- V. p. approximans
- V. p. pallens:
- V. p. angulensis:
- Bay Islands (off northern Honduras)
- V. p. nicoyensis:
- Nicoya Peninsula and eastern side of Gulf of Nicoya (northwestern Costa Rica)
The subspecies approximans has in the past been considered a subspecies of Thick-billed Vireo. It is sometimes considered a full species, Providencia Vireo.
Some other subspecies (wetmorei, browningi, olsoni) are not generally recognized.
Habitat
Forests, coastal mangrove forest and shrubland. Except for on Yucatán, only found very close to the coast.
Behaviour
Vocalizations
Calls often consist of repetitions of a single sound. Song can be more varied, sometimes suggesting House Wren[4].
