Cantorchilus modestus

Identification

13 cm
Upperside brown but washed grey on nape and crown and more rufous on rump. Underside pale, washed grey on breast but rufous on flanks. Head is mostly white with black eye-line. Barring on wings indistinct but on tail distinct black.

Distribution

Southern Mexico (east of the Isthmus), Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua and north-western Costa Rica.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Formerly considered conspecific with Isthmian Wren and Canebrake Wren under the name Plain Wren.
Was formerly placed in genus Thryothorus like all other species of the genus Cantorchilus.

Habitat

Lowland subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical moist forests, and heavily degraded former forest.

Behaviour

Food is invertebrates mostly found in dense vegetation.

Vocalizations

Song consists of clear whistles 3-4 in a series that may be given by the male or by the pair splitting the duty so that she takes on the last note.
