Canebrake Wren - BirdForum Opus

Identification

Upperside grey-brown, more grey towards the front, tending to olive tones on rump and tail; the tail is also barred in black. Wings are likewise grey-brown but with barring of slightly darker tones. Face shows mottling on ear coverts and a grey-brown eye-stripe with a prominent white supercilium above. Underside is pale with grey wash on breast and buff wash to the rear, qhite noticeable on the undertail coverts. Legs and bill are dark with lower mandible paler than upper.

Similar species

Similar to but greyer and duller than Isthmian Wren and Cabani's Wren.

Distribution

Caribbean slope of eastern Nicaragua to eastern Costa Rica and northwestern Panama (western Bocas del Toro).

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Formerly considered conspecific with Isthmian Wren and Cabani's Wren under the name Plain Wren.
Was formerly placed in genus Thryothorus like all other species of the genus Cantorchilus.

Habitat

Lowland subtropical or tropical dry forests, subtropical or tropical moist forests, and heavily degraded former forest.

Behaviour

Feeds low in dense vegetation

Vocalizations

The song is quite complex and involves duetting.
