Disambiguation: Chestnut-bellied Chat-Tyrant, Maroon-belted Chat-Tyrant, and Blackish Chat-Tyrant formerly were one species named Slaty-backed Chat-Tyrant. However, IOC left that name in place for what here is called Chestnut-bellied Chat-Tyrant.
Identification
12–13 cm (4¾-5 in)
- Upperside and head including throat slaty to blackish
- White supercilium reaches just beyond the eye
- Long Rictal bristles
- Underside from central breast is deep chestnut
Distribution
South America: found in Andes of Colombia, Ecuador (entire east slope, south on the west slope to Chimborazo), and extreme northern Peru (east slope, north and west of the Marañón Valley); likely to also reach into Venezuela at the extreme end of eastern Andes of Colombia.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat
Along forested streams in mid elevation, to heights around 3000 m asl.
Behaviour
Diet
Their main diet consists of insects which they wait for on a favorite perch. They rarely join mixed species flocks.
Vocalisation
Main sound is a whistle with a buzzy quality which is mostly given with long intervals. A similar whistle may occasionally be followed by multible short "tseet" notes.
