Identification
Large size with black plumage and white belly together with red nuchal crest diagnostic. Male - Crown and crest red. Has red malar stripes. Female - Lacks red malar stripes. Size-43cm.
Distribution
The Indian sub-continent, China, and Korea, south to S.E.Asia, the Greater Sundas, Bali and the Philippines.

- D. j. richardsi - Korea; extinct on Tsushima I. (Japan)
- D. j. forresti - Montane forests of northern Myanmar and adjacent sw China
