Identification

27-29cm

  • Black, brown, buff and white plumage

Distribution

Breeds in southern Siberia and Mongolia; winters to eastern and southern India, Sri Lanka, south-eastern China, South-east Asia, New Guinea, Philippines and northern Australia.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Breeds in meadows and forest glades. Can be found in a variety of habitats when not breeding, including marshes, paddy fields, sewage farms. Shallow water and mud is required for feeding.

Behaviour

The diet includes earthworms, molluscs and insects.
