Achiote Road

Central America, Panama

Overview

Achiote Road is one of central Panama's best birding areas, 2 and half hours drive from Panama City. It is the natural limit of distribuition for many species of both North and South America.

The specialties of the area are the King Vulture, Bicolored Hawk, Plumbeous Hawk, Semiplumbeous Hawk, Slaty-backed Forest Falcon, Crested Guan, Great Curassow, Marbled Wood Quail, Uniform Crake, Colombian Crake, Rufous-necked Wood Rail, Spotted Rail, Violaceous Quail Dove, Garden Emerald, Spot-crowned Barbet, Black-crowned Antpitta, White-headed Wren, Stripe-breasted Wren, Sulphur-rumped Tanager, Yellow-crowned Euphonia and many others

The community nearby have trained guides and have set up trails for birders. They also offer lodging in the recently inaugurated El Tucan visitor center. Besides the birding, visiting the community and using the services they provide will help them to preserve this beautiful jungle.
