Identification
21cm. A long-tailed, icterid-like Tanager.
Male
- Glossy blue-black plumage
- Scarlet patch extending from the throat to centre of the chest
- Dark brown eye
- Fairly stout, black bill
- Strong, dusky grey legs
Female
- Lacks scarlet patch, plumage entirely black
Distribution
South America: found in arid north-eastern Brazil.
Uncommon. Suffers from extensive deforestation and habitat fragmentation.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Sometimes placed in genus Sericossypha.
Habitat
Near water, woodland and semi-open areas.
Occurs at 200 - 1000m.
Behaviour
Feeds on insects.
Often seen in small groups of up to 8 birds, usually more females in a group than males.
The nest is well hidden, usually placed deep in vegetation or in an abandoned woodpeckers' hole.
A resident species.
