Sweden

Overview

This area lies in the far north of Sweden, 120km into the Arctic Circle and about 50km east of Kiruna. The main habitat is a large mire complex with swampy woodlands, coniferous forest, lakes and marshes.

Birds

Notable Species

Breeding birds include Whooper Swan, Taiga Bean Goose, Common Crane and waders such as Spotted Redshank, Jack Snipe, Wood Sandpiper and Broad-billed Sandpiper in the wetter areas.

The forests are home to Hazel Grouse, Siberian Tit, Siberian Jay and Pine Grosbeak. Hen Harrier and White-tailed Eagle and Golden Eagle occur in summer.

The industrial town of Kiruna is easily reached by road or rail from Stockholm. Ripakaisenvuoma can be reached on Route 396, the road from Vittangi (where hotel accommodation is available) to Karesuando.
