Identification
14–14·5 cm (5½-5¾ in)
Very heavy bill. Male has black plumage and pinkish-yellow bill. Females and juveniles brown dorsal plumage, warmer brown underparts and dark bill.
Similar species
Thick-billed Seed-Finch female is similar but smaller with a less dominant bill.
Distribution
Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species1.
Formerly placed in genus Oryzoborus.
Habitat
Grasslands near shallow water flanked by higher vegetation or secondary forest
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet con☺ists almost entirely of grass seeds. Outside of the breeding season they can be seen in small flocks, sometimes with other finches.
Breedng
The nest is a flimsy cup of grass and fibres; it is placed low to the ground or over water.
