Caprimulgus atripennis

Identification

28cm. Buff and brown feathers, barred tail, rufous neck, wing bars.

Distribution

South India and Sri Lanka.

Taxonomy

Two subspecies recognized:

  • C. a. atripennis in south India (Western and Eastern Ghats)
  • C. a. aequabilis on Sri Lanka

Sometimes regarded conspecific with Large-tailed Nightjar.

Habitat

Open woodland, scrub, and cultivation.

Behaviour

2 marbled eggs are placed upon the bare ground.
