Overview

This reserve, now a Ramsar Site, is close to the town of Lulea at the head of the Gulf of Bothnia. It consists of a four km shallow and brackish lake that was once a bay, the shorelines are marshy with abundant vegetation, especially reedbeds, and provides habitat for good numbers of breeding waterfowl and waders and resting and feeding sites for migrants.

Birds

Notable Species

Breeders include grebes and many ducks such as Eurasian Wigeon, Common Teal, Garganey, Northern Shoveler, Smew and Common Goldeneye. The waders nesting here include Ruff, Common Snipe, Common Redshank and Red-necked Phalarope, and Marsh Harrier, Short-eared Owl and Little Gull also breed.

Passage visitors such as Osprey and Common Crane occur regularly as well as Smew and various waders.

Botanically the area is of interest as it has a mixture of northern species and also many more southerly plants at the northernmost point of their range.
