Identification
9" (23cm) A small, dark Nighthawk.
Males show white tips to outer rectrices; females are buffy.
Distribution
Central America: Endemic to Costa Rica and western Panama.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
It was formerly placed in the genus Caprimulgus.
Habitat
Extreme upper elevations including Paramo habitat from 1500 to 1800 m, semi-open habitat and open forests.
Behaviour
Active and calling at dusk, often perches about 2 metres above ground between foraging spurts.
