June Moths (2 Viewers)

Big mistake last night - set my trap up but then got so involved in the football I forgot to switch it on. Tony down the road had 161 moths with loads new for his year list.
So tonight I must not make the same mistake.

We've all been there!

Mainly Bee Moths for me a NFY Smokey Wainscott being the only real interest.

Two nights worth to report, and I've a couple of micros for ID which I'll put in the right forum as soon as I've processed the photos (but I've Sywell Airshow to go through this week before Tankfest.....)

Yesterday morning it was about numbers: 13 Chrysoteuchia culmella and 13 Heart and Dart plus 3 Heart and Club and 2 Uncertain. Otherwise a Green Pug and a Green Oak Tortrix.

This morning a busy trap contained 3 Eudonia lacustrata, 9 C. culmella, 9 Heart and Dart, 2 Heart and Club, 2 Uncertain and tick 2 Crassa unitella. Catches of singles included Large Yellow Underwing, Peppered Moth, Dark Arches, Pale Mottled Willow and Small Magpie.

I managed to remember to switch it on this time.....
31 moths of 19 species is nothing compared to what the people with better locations are getting but it included 15 NFY and I was particularly pleased with a few of them........
A Heart and Club - my first here, only caught them on Jersey before
3 Scarlet Tigers - doubling my previous total
A Clay Triple-lines - only my third in 20 years here

Steve

One of these days I'll get around to attributing some of my Rustic/Uncertains to species, but not today, so onto the year list it goes as an aggregate. Common Emerald & Grey Pugs also year ticks, nothing all that notable in the rest.

Good question!

Most of the sources I've read indicate that some well marked fresh individuals can be assigned to species. The features seem mostly pretty subjective, hence me reticence in having a go so far, but I feel like paying closer attention to them now to see how I go. It may be that I am not able to convince myself sufficiently of either species, but it's sure to be educational. Looking back over those I have previously photographed there are none that look all that convincing either way, but as they've now started to appear this year looking at them more closely will give me a bit of a project to work on.

Am I to assume from your question that you prefer to leave them aggregated?

A game of two halves this morning.

First half, the trap.

NFY Swallow-tailed Moth, Snout, new for me Short-cloaked Moth, Pseudargyotoza conwagana, Ash Bud Moth. Numbers: Chrysoteuchia culmella 14, Heart and Dart 9, Variegated Golden Tortrix 3. One or two other micros I haven't ID'd yet and some boring macros not worth mentioning.

Second half, lunchtime decision to water two rather dry tomato plants - for some reason I looked in the watering can before filling it and found a Goat Moth!!! Tick btw - over the moon....

John

A catch-up from Monday night with (5 NFY)-
Cream-bordered green pea, Common Footman, Common White Wave, Yellow Shell and
Buff Ermine. (9 of 8).

Last night- (6 of 6) with just (1 NFY)-Oak Nycteoline and as with most nights…a few escapes.😩

Much of a muchness last night/am with one (NFY) which zapped past me in the darkened doorway into the kitchen….White Ermine.
Miffed at several escaping Geoms. which looked promising 😩 C’est la vie.
In total..nine of eight + a very nice micro sp in the ID section.

You’ve got some “great moths” up there BriLee the likes of which will never grace my abode, the Beautiful Snout is superb!👍

A poor night for moi…last night.
Many Tortix under the Parasol, a Treble Brown Spot on the window and a solitary Heart and Club in the pot…methinks a not unattractive one at that.
That's a Crackinv Heart and Dart Ken,not seen one as nice as that, regards Bri.
