Overview
One of the largest remaining woodland blocks in western Wales, the Pengelli Forest is an area of Sessile Oak and Birch woodland with Alder and Ash with a range of birds typical of a Welsh woodland.
The area is managed for the benefit of the breeding birds with an extensive nest-box programme.
Birds
Notable Species
Common Kestrel, Eurasian Sparrowhawk and Common Buzzard are common and easily seen although Tawny Owl may be harder to find. Green Woodpecker and Great Spotted Woodpecker also breed as well as Eurasian Nuthatch, Common Treecreeper and various members of the tit family. Warblers include Garden Warbler, Wood Warbler and Willow Warbler with Blackcap and Common Chiffchaff common. Both Spotted Flycatcher and Pied Flycatcher breed along with Common Redstart and Goldcrest.
Winter sees the arrival of Woodcock, Fieldfare, Redwing and Brambling with Grey Wagtail and Common Dipper along the streams.

Other Wildlife
Mammals present in these woods include Badger Meles meles, Polecat Mustelus putorius and Hazel Dormouse Muscardinus avellanarius.
There is a rich ground flora in parts of the woodland with Golden Saxifrage, Early Dog-violet, Moschatel and Common Cow-wheat.

Access and Facilities
Pengelli Forest can be reached from the A487 Cardigan to Fishguard road, turning off just east of Felindre Farchog onto a minor road. Continue acroos the ford until the entrance gate is reached and from here a series of footpaths enables visitors to explore the woods.
