Acridotheres cinereus

Identification

25cm. A medium-sized, greyish Myna.

  • Blackish head with crest
  • Grey hindneck and upperparts, paler on rump
  • Dark brown wing with white patch
  • Brownish-black tail with white tip
  • Ashy-grey chin, throat and breast
  • Paler buffy grey belly, white vent
  • Lemon-yellow to brownish-orange eye
  • Yellow bill with small blue-grey patch at base of lower mandible
  • Yellow legs

Sexes similar. Juveniles undescribed.

Distribution

Endemic to south peninsular Sulawesi.
Introduced in Kuching, Borneo.
Locally common, but poorly known. Increasing in Kuching.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
This species has been involved in several rounds of splitting. It has been considered conspecific with Javan Myna and together with the latter it has also been included in Jungle Myna. The name usage is somewhat confused; see the disambiguation page for White-vented Myna

Habitat

Open areas like paddyfields, villages and cultivated areas. Occurs from lowlands up to 1500m.

Behaviour

Feeds on insects and fruit.
Often seen foraging on the ground among cattle, usually in small groups, also singly or in pairs.
The nest is placed in a tree hole. No other information about breeding.
Presumably a resident species.
