Taxonomy
This species was formerly included in the genus Orthotomus.
The scientific name is also spelled cuculatus.
Subspecies
There are 14 subspecies[1]:
- P. c. coronatus: Mountains of eastern Nepal to north-eastern India, south-western China, northern Thailand, Laos, Vietnam
- P. c. thais: Mountains of peninsula Thailand (south of Isthmus of Kra)
- P. c. malayanus: Malay Peninsula
- P. c. cucullatus: Sumatra, Java and Bali
- P. c. cinereicollis: Mountains of north-eastern Borneo (Kinabalu to Mulu and Tama Abu Range)
- P. c. philippinus: North Luzon (northern Philippines)
- P. c. viridicollis: Mountains of Palawan (south-western Philippines)
- P. c. riedeli: North Sulawesi
- P. c. stentor: North-central and south-eastern Sulawesi
- P. c. meisei: South-central Sulawesi (Latimojong Mountains)
- P. c. hedymeles: southwestern Sulawesi (Moncong Lompobatang)
- P. c. relictus: Peleng (Banggai Islands)
- P. c. sulanus: Taliabu (Sula Islands)
- P. c. batjanensis: Mountains of Bacan Island (northern Moluccas)
- P. c. dumasi: South Moluccas (Buru and Seram)
- P. c. everetti: Flores (western Lesser Sundas)
Habitat
Broadleaf evergreen forests, where they favour bushy thickets, bamboo and dangling tangles.
Behaviour
Diet
They usually forage in pairs or small family parties. There is not much information but they appear to eat insects and small invertebrates.
Breeding
They seem to time their breeding to coincide with the wet season.
