Chlorospingus ophthalmicus

Identification

13.5 cm. Olive above, yellow below, white belly, brown head, thin supercilium, light throat, white spot behind eye. Colour of cheek, throat and eye area varies across range. Juvenile - brown above, darker below, dull olive eye spot.

Distribution

Central Mexico to Bolivia and northwest Argentina.

Taxonomy

There are 26 subspecies.

Habitat

Cloud forests.

Behaviour

The diet includes insects, spiders, small fruits and nectar.

The cup nest is built from twigs, roots, leaves and mosses, lined with leaves and fibres. 2 off white, puce and maroon spotted eggs (sometimes 1, sometimes 3) are laid and incubated by the female. Both parents feed the young.

Vocalisation

Call: squeaky tseeet or chit.
