Identification

Male very dark blue except in relicta which is more slaty, female cinnamon-brown.

Distribution

Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, and Peru.

Taxonomy

Three subspecies recognized, which does not overlap in range with each other.
Subspecies relicta from Mexico west of Isthmus is sometimes split as Slate-blue Seedeater.

Habitat

Moist montanes.
