South America: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Three subspecies recognized[1], which do not overlap in range with each other.
- A. c. relicta (Slate-blue Seedeater):
- Mountains of southern Mexico (southern Jalisco to Guerrero, Morelos and Oaxaca)
- A. c. concolor :
- Mountains of southern Mexico (Chiapas) to Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama
- A. c. aequatorialis (Ecuadorian Seedeater):
Subspecies relicta from Mexico west of Isthmus is sometimes split as Slate-blue Seedeater.[2] Gill and Donsker split aequatorialis as Ecuadorian Seedeater and name the remaining species Cabanis's Seedeater.
Habitat
They can be found in the undergrowth of tropical woodlands and forests, especially where bamboo grows.
Behaviour
Diet
Their main diet consists of seeds, particularly bamboo. Also insects and possibly leaf petioles of bamboo.
