Identification
24cm. As recently described as 1999. A long-tailed Barwing:
- Grey head
- Dark crown
- Bold white eyering
- Long tail finely barred with black
- Rufous underparts with dark throat streaks
- Primary feather barred like tail, wings very dark
Sexes similar, juveniles not yet described.
Similar species
Spectacled Barwing is superficially similar, but note largely black wing in Black-crowned Barwing, throat streaks, dark crown and more heavily barred tail.
Distribution
Found in eastern parts of south Laos and adjacent central Vietnam.
Restricted-range species with small range and very local. Asessed as vulnerable.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Moist montanes, high-altitude shrubland, high-altitude grassland, and plantations. Found at 1000 - 2400m.
Behaviour
No information about diet, feeds probably on invertebrates and some vegetable matter.
All sightings yet have been of single birds or pairs, one together with Black-headed Sibia. Usually seen in canopy, feeding around tree boles and larg moss-covered branches.
No information about breeding.
