Spectacled Barwing - BirdForum Opus

Alternative name: Ramsay's Barwing

Actinodura ramsayi

Identification

23.5 - 24.5cm (9¼-9¾ in). A long-tailed, unstreaked Barwing:

  • Bold white eyering
  • Densely barred on wings and tail
  • Plain buff below
  • Grey ear-coverts and nape
  • Crown and mantle greyish in nominate, rufous in yunnanensis

Sexes similar, juveniles are not yet described.

Distribution

Found in Burma, north Thailand, Laos, north Vietnam and south China (Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi).
Common in parts of its range.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Three subspecies accepted[1]:

  • A. r. radcliffei in east and eastcentral Burma
  • A. r. ramsayi in southeast Burma and northwest Thailand
  • A. r. yunnanensis in south China (Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi) and north Vietnam

Birds in north Thailand and Laos probably represent a fourth subspecies which is not yet described.

Habitat

Moist montanes, secondary growth, scrub, grass and bamboo. Found at 1000 - 2500m, locally lower.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds presumably on invertebrates and some vegetable matter.
Usually seen in pairs or small groups, often together with other species.

Breeding

Breeding season from March to April. One described nest was a cup made of roots, placed in half-dried creepers above some rocks. Lays 2 eggs.

Movements

Resident species.
