Notharchus pectoralis


19–23 cm (7½-9 in)

  • Glossy blue-black overall plumage
  • White throat and auricular patch, separated by broad black band
  • Narrow white nuchal collar

Sexes are similar.


Humid forests of eastern Panama to western Colombia and north-western Ecuador

This is a monotypic species[1].


Tropical wet forest, second growth woodland, often near running water.



Their diet consists of large centipedes, millipedes, scorpions, spiders, roaches, grasshoppers or katydids.


Both adults excavate an 18cm deep nest hole in arboreal termitarium.
