Ammarnas Sweden

About 100km from the better-known Arjeplog, this area has similar habitats of forest, lakes and bogs but has a wider range of birds. The area is based around a delta formed by the meeting of the Vindelalven and Tjulan rivers and forms part of the large Vindelfjallens Nature Reserve.

Specialities of Ammarnas include occasional appearances by White-tailed Eagle and Gyr Falcon, as well as Broad-billed Sandpiper, Great Snipe and Long-tailed Skua. The wetland areas have Long-tailed Duck, Greater Scaup and various waders and in the forest are grouse, Northern Hawk Owl and Tengmalm's Owls, Three-toed Woodpecker and Siberian Jay. The more upland areas have Golden Eagle and Merlin, Eurasian Dotterel, Rock Ptarmigan and Horned Lark.

Ammarnas has hotel and cabin accommodation and can be reached by road from Sorsele, about 90 km away. Much-visited by Swedish birders, the areas is now becoming a regular haunt of foreign visitors.
