The species Hooded Pitta have been split into these five species:
- Western Hooded Pitta - From India to the Philippines and to Southeast Asia, Greater Sundas and Indonesia east to Sangihe Island
- Nicobar Hooded Pitta - Great and Little Nicobar Islands
- Minahasa Hooded Pitta - northern Sulawesi (Minahasa Peninsula)
- Eastern Hooded Pitta - New Guinea and some nearby islands
- Biak Hooded Pitta - Biak Island. (off northwest New Guinea)
There were alternative names for Hooded Pitta: Green-breasted Pitta (but this is more often used for Green-breasted Pitta from Africa); Black-headed Pitta (but this is more often used for Black-crowned Pitta).
