Identification
22 cm (8¾ in)
- Red bill
Male
- Slate-blue crown and upperparts
- Black wing feathers, edged with slate-blue
- Black face, throat and breast
Distribution
South America: found in eastern Brazil, Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1], sometimes considered a subspecies of Slate-colored Grosbeak[2].
Habitat
Humid forests and scrub, also secondary rainforest with bamboo.
Behaviour
Diet
Very little information is available about their diet, but it is likely to include seeds.
Breeding
The eggs are greenish-blue. The nests are commonly parasitised by Shiny Cowbird
