Selenidera spectabilis

Identification

Black underside except for yellow on flanks, chestnut thighs, and red undertail coverts. Upperside olive-green with slaty grey tail. Male has mostly black head with yellow on auriculars and bare skin around eyes green with yellow and blue; female lacks the yellow on auriculars and have a chestnut crown and rear neck. Bill dark; upper mandible has a pale area above a diagonal from the lower tip to the upper base.

Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, and northern Ecuador.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.

Habitat

Moist lowland forests and montanes.

Behaviour

These birds like the fruit of certain palm species.

They often stay in dense vegetation.
