Male very dark blue except in relicta which is more slaty, female cinnamon-brown.
Distribution
Central and South America:
Central America: Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama
South America: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru
Taxonomy
Subspecies[1]
Three subspecies recognized, which does not overlap in range with each other.
- A. c. relicta (Slate-blue Seedeater):
- Mountains of southern Mexico (southern Jalisco to Guerrero, Morelos and Oaxaca)
- A. c. concolor :
- Mountains of southern Mexico (Chiapas) to Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama
- A. c. aequatorialis:
Subspecies relicta from Mexico west of Isthmus is sometimes split as Slate-blue Seedeater.[2]
Habitat
Moist montanes.
