Identification
31–34 cm (12¼-13½ in)
Male
- Mottled black and white
- White cheek patch
- White throat with black bar
- Rufous stripe extending above eye to back of head
- Curved blue black bill
Female: similar, duller, lacks spurs
Distribution
Asia: China, India and Hong Kong
Southeast Asia: Indochina, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Philippines.

Breeding
The nest is a ground scrape lined with grass, dry leaves and occasionally feathers. The clutch contains 4-5 are cream-coloured eggs.
