Overview
One of the best shorebird and tern areas in Massachusetts. South Beach is a long beach projecting from the bottom of Cape Cod and nearly reaching north and south Monomoy Islands, which at one time were one.
Birds
Notable Species
Nearly all of the regularly occurring shorebirds are found here in the summer and fall. A staging area for Roseate Tern, Common Tern, Black Tern, and Forster's Tern as well as many species of shorebirds.
Horned Lark and Piping Plover breed here.
Rarities
Rarities include Magnificent Frigatebird, Little Egret, Eurasian Kestrel, Eurasian Hobby, Gyrfalcon, European Golden-Plover, Wilson's Plover, Common Ringed Plover, Curlew Sandpiper, Eurasian Curlew, Long-billed Curlew, Black-tailed Godwit, Bar-tailed Godwit, Little Stint, Red-necked Stint, Franklin's Gull, Black-tailed Gull, Arctic Tern, Elegant Tern, Sandwich Tern, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Cave Swallow, and Brown-chested Martin (specimen).
