14–16 cm (5½-6¼ in)

  • Long bill
  • Dusky legs
  • Slate gray upperparts
  • Pale gray underparts
  • Black wing coverts with 2 rows of small white dots
  • Brown primaries

Female: gray head, brown back, dark brown wings with 3 rows of buff spots, buff throat, orange-rufous underparts.

Distribution

South America: found in Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana

Taxonomy

Humaita Antbird M. humaythae, Brownish-headed Antbird M. brunneiceps, Rufous-faced Antbird S. rufifacies, and Roraiman Antbird M. saturatus were included in M. leucostigma before 2006.[1][2]

Subspecies

There are 4 subspecies[1]:

  • M. l. leucostigma:
  • East Venezuela (eastern Bolívar) to the Guianas and north-eastern Amazonian [Brazil]]
  • M. l. infuscatus:
  • East Colombia to southern Venezuela and north-western Amazonian Brazil
  • M. l. subplumbeus:
  • East Colombia to extreme western Venezuela, north-eastern Peru and adjacent western Brazil
  • M. l. intensus:
