Identification
14–16 cm (5½-6¼ in)
- Long bill
- Dusky legs
- Slate gray upperparts
- Pale gray underparts
- Black wing coverts with 2 rows of small white dots
- Brown primaries
Female: gray head, brown back, dark brown wings with 3 rows of buff spots, buff throat, orange-rufous underparts.
Distribution
South America: found in Brazil, Peru, Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, and French Guiana
Taxonomy
Humaita Antbird M. humaythae, Brownish-headed Antbird M. brunneiceps, Rufous-faced Antbird S. rufifacies, and Roraiman Antbird M. saturatus were included in M. leucostigma before 2006.[1][2]
Subspecies
There are 4 subspecies[1]:
- M. l. leucostigma:
- M. l. infuscatus:
- East Colombia to southern Venezuela and north-western Amazonian Brazil
- M. l. subplumbeus:
- East Colombia to extreme western Venezuela, north-eastern Peru and adjacent western Brazil
- M. l. intensus:
- Central Peru (Huánuco, Pasco, Junín and southern Ucayali)
Habitat
Moist lowland forests and montanes.
Behaviour
Diet
They eat a variety of insects such as beetles, ants and spiders also small lizards recorded.
