South America: found in Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, northern Bolivia, Venezuela, French Guiana, and western Brazil.
Taxonomy
This species seems very closely related to Waved Woodpecker
Subspecies
Four subspecies are recognized[1]:
- C. g. grammicus:
- C. g. verreauxii :
- Tropical eastern Ecuador and adjacent north-eastern Peru
- C. g. subcervinus:
- West Amazonian Brazil and northern Mato Grosso
- C. g. latifasciatus:
- South East Peru to northern Bolivia and western Brazil (upper Rio Madeira)
Habitat
Moist lowland forests, second growth, and tree rich savannas.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds from heavier branches and trunks. Their main diet consists of ants and fruit.
