Identification
23–24 cm (9-9½ in)
Male
- Red band from bill to ear-coverts
- Pale chestnut-red head
Female: Female lacks red facial band
Distribution
South America: found in Guyana, Suriname and French Guiana, eastern border of Venezuela, northern Brazil including Marajo Island and Ilha de Marajo.
Taxonomy
This species seems very closely related to Scaly-breasted Woodpecker

- C. u. amacurensis:
- North East Venezuela (Delta Amacuro)
- C. u. multifasciatus:
- North East Brazil s of the Amazon (Pará east to Rio Tocantins)
Habitat
Moist lowland forests.
