Schistocichla leucostigma

Includes Roraiman Antbird; Humaita Antbird; Brownish-headed Antbird; and Rufous-faced Antbird

Identification

14.5 cm, Long bill, dusky legs, slate gray above, pale gray below, black wing coverts with 2 rows of small white dots, brown primaries. Female - gray head, brown back, dark brown wings with 3 rows of buff spots, buff throat, orange rufous underparts.

Distribution

Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela.

Taxonomy

Proposed to be split up into five species:

  • Spot-winged Antbird, S. leucostigma with subspecies leucostigma, infuscata, subplumbea and intensa
  • Humaita Antbird, S. humaythae, monotypic. Found in Amazonian Brazil and extreme N Bolivia.
  • Brownish-headed Antbird, S. brunneiceps, monotypic. Found in S Peru.
  • Rufous-faced Antbird, S. rufifacies, monotypic. Found in Brazil.
  • Roraiman Antbird, S. saturata with subspecies saturata and obscura. Found in easternmost tepus of Venezuela.

As is the case with all members of the genus Schistocichla, it is often included in the genus Percnostola instead.

Habitat

Moist lowland forests and montanes.
