Early morning walk around Pulborough Brooks this morning, Nightingales, Cuckoo, Garden Warbler, Blackcaps, Sedge Warblers, Common Whitethroats and plenty of Wrens making a fine musical accompaniment to trip around the Brooks. Waders on show included Wood Sandpipers, Ruff, Greenshank, Little Ringed Plover, Black-tailed Godwits along with the local Redshanks, Lapwings and Avocets. Possibly the star of the show was the Green-winged Teal which put on a nice display from Nettley's hide .Even saw a Great Diving Beetle in one of the Ponds! Left before the crowds built up in the heat! More pics on the Blog

Were they the thin ones about an inch long with a white bit at the back end?
They're bigger than that, maybe two or three inches long (stick insect size!) with a long straight prong out the back - I've got pictures but haven't processed them yet, I'll put one up later today.

Cheers

John

PS: I don't really think "Pah" about Great Diving Beetles - they are smart!

Not one of them then, I've been doing a bit of research but can't find what I saw !!

Could it have been a Water Measurer? Clare wasn't sure when she first found the beasts but a quick google made it clear we were looking at Water Stick Insects.

John
No, was an underwater beast, thin, about an inch long, black colour with a light blob near the back end. Moved slowly, difficult to tell but seen to propel itself from little fins on the side!! Can't find a pic that matches it as yet, was wondering maybe some sort of caddis fly larvae or something!
