Dyfi Osprey Project (1 Viewer)

Yes indeed Mary, you make a very valid point, further distress is the last possible thing anyone would want to inflict on the family.

With this in mind perhaps it's time to consider other names, I'm sure all the girls on DOP Facebook (they outnumber the boys by about two hundred to one :eek!:) will come up with a most suitable name...but it has to be Welsh ;)

About 3 years ago whilst in Scotland with my wife who was expecting our second child I started messing around calling junior the name of the osprey at Loch Garten. Strangely it stuck and his middle name now comes from an Osprey. Not sure if I should tell him that later on though;)

We have just been looking at the diary for this week, and Monty has caught 25 fish this week, with half of them being Grey Mullet. The Sea Trout have increased in the number this week, which is a good sign for Monty and the fisherman alike. If Sea Trout (Sewen) numbers were low, Monty would not be catching as many as he is, so it seems like a good run for the Sea Trout this year, especially with the River Dyfi at a low level.

Monty and Blue 12 are looking like a settled pair now. Tomorrow will be the 3rd day where they have been settled and pair bonding (sharing fish, successful mating, nest building etc.) If after tomorrow and it is still the same scenario, the outlook for eggs in roughly 2 weeks time will look very promising. Just got to hope nothing changes (which is unlikely) and that they carry on doing what they're doing now.

A quiet morning so far. Monty landed on the ash tree perch at 07:40 with a small Flounder and fed for 15 minutes. He then took it to Blue 12 on the nest, who took her part to eat on a low-level perch. She fed for 20 minutes before landing back on the nest. There has been a few successful mating attempts this morning, and both are now on the nest. It looks like being a nice day today, and a good day for 'intruders'. Watch this space..

Quite agree, Tiger, just as EJ is EJ! What is Welsh for Blue 12?

Another thought re an April memorial- would there be a small plot of land on the site somewhere for a wildflower garden? Perhaps involving the local school?

Hello all, been away a few days [in london] and got back late yesterday and unfortunatly came home to find out that my nan had passed away yesterday afternoon. She was lucky that she passed away peacefully in her sleep and my uncle and two cousins were there, two cousins which have hardley seen her in recent years. She's had dementia for quite a few years now...but still had all her scrupels about her so it stressed her out that she was in a home with people far more advanced in thier mental states then her.

We were told in recent weeks she had been refusing food and medicine, she was already frail enough but they believe she finally gave up, they havent actually given a cause of death yet. We're going to the home tomorrow to pick up all her things and thank them for looking after nan, she may not of been happy there but the staff were wonderfull and some really did get attached to her whilst she was there.

Sorry to bring the thread down, i dont have anywhere else to post this.

That's desperately sad news - on behalf of all the people involved, we pass on our deepest condolences and hope you and the family and pull together in this difficult time. Not that it makes things much better, it's better to know she died peacefully in her sleep and that she wasn't alone, and that she is now not suffering any longer. I hope you and your family are as well as you can be in this difficult stage of your lives.

Great video of Monty catching the fish well done.

It's been one hell of a story so far! It is sad about Nora, especially given that she is such a young bird, but this is nature, and we're not sure what has happened to her.

Things look very well and settled now between Monty and Glesni (Blue 12), and they are doing all the right things are pair should be doing. If all goes to plan, there are hopes for the first egg to be laid the weekend after next.

Thanks Tiger. Alwyn was up in the hide trying to direct me to where Monty was fishing. Monty flew down to the bend of the river by Glandyfi, flew across towards the main part of the estuary before flying back to the bend of the river. It was when he returned to the bend of the river when I picked him up. He then started flying back up the river before plunging into the river and bringing the Sea Trout back to the ash tree perch. I managed to pick him up on camera just in time!

It's been a strange day to say the least! We have experienced some behaviour from both Monty and Blue 12 that is unusual. Another Osprey was around earlier (fairly certain it was a male), however there wasn't much aggressive behaviour (mantling, chasing) from neither Monty nor Blue 12.

Monty then landed on the perch to the left of the 'alternative' nest site on the reserve, along side this other Osprey! Both had a fish each and were just eating away. Blue 12 was on the nest, and it was her that eventually chased this other Osprey away down the estuary. She then came back to the nest with a large Grey Mullet that she had caught herself! This isn't the first time this has happened in the Osprey world, but it should be the male doing all the fishing from now on.

We'll have to wait and see if this bird appears again tomorrow or in the near future, but it was strange that both birds were relatively comfortable with this bird being here. It is relatively early for 2 year old birds to return to the UK, however the window is just about opening. We are fairly optimistic for the return of Einion (Blue DH (11)) so there has been some wishful thinking that this bird could be him! No aerial from a satellite-tracking device was visible though.

Blue 12 has caught another fish of her own today, which is unusual behaviour. There are many suggestions for this, which are as follows:

1 - Blue 12 is a 3 year old and has had to provide for herself throughout her adult life. She's obviously not used to being provided for and is slowly getting used to life as a breeding female.

2 - Blue 12 may just have been flying around and spotted an easy catch - old habits die hard.

3 - Blue 12 may not be satisfied with Monty's production of food for her. This is unlikely though as Monty has already caught over 80 fish in a month!

03 (08) (Nora) also did this behaviour when she arrived on the Dyfi on 9th April 2011, so it hasn't come as a huge surprise, but is unusual behaviour.

I have time off in August [aslong as thats a good time] and i was gonna be in london, but plans have changed so i thought this is my chance and cos i've posted on this thread, why would i go to any other reserve?

All i'd need to know is accomadation close to the reserve cos i dont drive! haha

It will be well worth coming to the Dyfi - you won't be disappointed!

As for accommodation, it's difficult if you don't drive as the project is situated next to a main road. There is a B&B within walking distance called Morben Isaf - https://www.facebook.com/pages/Morben-Isaf-Bed-and-Breakfast-Morben-Isaf-House/360785093994580

There is also Tynohir Farm, self-catering accommodation - https://www.facebook.com/tyohirselfcateringacc.derwenlas?fref=ts

There is a regular bus service in the local area, which runs between Aberystwyth and the local town, Machynlleth. There is also a train service in the area. There are a couple of hotels in Machynlleth, which may suit you better, and just get a bus to 'Morben Isaf', and then it's a short walk to the project.
